PETA DISRUPTS HONG KONG FASHION WEEK

Posted by v on January 15, 2008

Two women from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an international animal welfare group, suddenly stood up in the middle of the seminar attended by 100 people from the fashion industry, chanting “Fur is Murder”.
They struggled to unfold banners reading “Fur Hurts” before being pinned down by security guards and dragged out of the room.
Once outside, the activists stripped off to reveal two banners - on their front and back - that read: “We’d rather go naked than wear fur” and “Turn your back on animal cruelty”.

Here’s what PETA Asia Pacific’s Rebecca Chui had to say about it:
“We want the Fashion Week attendees to know that fur means cruelty to animals. They suffer terrible pain from the time they are caught. Some of them are skinned alive. Some are killed by poisoning, gassing or anal or vaginal electrocution. We are in the 21st century and there is fur substitute now. There’s no excuse to kill any more animals.”
Asked for comment on this statement, the Hong Kong Fur Federation called it “extremely regrettable”—by which I can only assume they meant “bad for business.”

We welcome your comments on this topic. Would you wear fur?

TRIBUTE TO MARIA LAUTERBACH

Posted by v on January 15, 2008

Read this moving tribute to Maria Laterbach and to the women murdered by their spouse or someone known to them.
Last November, Maria Lauterbach, 20, above, of Dayton Ohio, who had enlisted in the Marines in June of 2006, became part of the combat logistics regiment based at Camp Lejeune, N.C. She worked for Marine Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, 21, who was her senior officer.
In April of last year, Lauterbach reported to her commanding officers that Laurean had raped her. Officers issued a protective order and assigned Lauterbach and Laurean to work in different buildings. The protective order was renewed twice, in April and September. It was renewed again in January, but by then Maria was dead.

BOTOX - Coming to a Mall near you.

Posted by v on January 15, 2008

(courtesy nytimes)
Thanks in part to television shows like “Extreme Makeover” and “Nip/Tuck,” the number of Americans seeking chemical peels, laser procedures, Botox shots and wrinkle-filler injections is soaring. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, such “noninvasive” treatments have increased more than 700 percent since 1997. Botox received Food and Drug Administration approval in 2002.
The stampede of doctors and entrepreneurs rushing to fill that demand has left some doctors and plastic-surgery trade groups wondering about the expertise of some of the people providing these services. For many Americans, price and convenience come first, with few questions about the experience and qualifications of the person injecting the treatments.
For its part, Sleek MedSpa says some of its outlets have on-site physicians while others have doctors as medical directors off-site, and nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants who handle day-to-day treatments. If there were an emergency a nurse couldn’t handle, the nurse would call 911, Mr. Rudnick said. He added that no such emergency had ever arisen.
Kim Wanderley, 39, a stay-at-home mom from Parkland, Fla., said she thought it was “great” when she spotted a Sleek MedSpa at the Town Center mall in Boca Raton in 2006. “If it had been in Ohio, people might have blinked twice, but this is South Florida,” where vanity rules, she said. “People do not take aging lightly, without a fight, here.”
While Sleek MedSpas lack the feng-shui ambience of a traditional beauty spa, they don’t exude the sterile atmosphere of a doctor’s office, either. The spa in Boca Raton is contemporary and sophisticated, Mrs. Wanderley said, with videos of cosmetic procedures streaming across a flat screen, skin-care products lining another wall and before-and-after picture brochures scattered around the waiting room.
And it’s convenient. “I can be in and out in a half-hour,” she said, and “it gives me an excuse to go to the mall afterward to do a little shopping.” If a procedure causes redness or bruising, the spa offers a convenient back-door exit to the parking lot.

DEBBIE DICKINSON JUMPS RIGHT BACK IN!!

Posted by v on January 15, 2008

Who is Debbie Dickinson? Janice Dickinson’s obviously quieter (also model) sister of course. She took off to Paris after her sister in 1975 and worked for the Elite Modelling Agency.

After more than 30 years away from the business, she recently signed with Click founder Frances Grill and resumed her modeling career. Grill rediscovered Debbie when the veteran model, playing a talent agent, imitated her in the upcoming movie “5up 2down” directed by Stephen Kessler. Her first job back from retirement was a bathing suit campaign for Keiko Swimwear.
I wonder why she just did not sign up with the “Janice Dickinson modelling agency”.

DESIGNER COLLABORATIONS - COACH AND DAVENPORTE

Posted by v on January 15, 2008

Miss DavenporteLOS ANGELES — Coach celebrated its latest design collaboration with Miss Davenporte, the contemporary line designed by celebrity stylists Estee Stanley and Cristina Ehrlich, with an afternoon-long lunch at Ago on Friday.

The megabrand and the designers collaborated on two limited edition bag styles — a smaller evening bag with chain handles and a large hobo. The smaller bags, which represent Coach’s first foray into the evening category, come in metallic and colored leather, navy lace and dark beads, which mirror colors and fabrics in the current Miss Davenporte clothing collection. Retail prices range from $398 to $698. The large hobo comes in brown leather and retails for $1,200. Only about 100 bags were produced and sell exclusively at Ron Herman stores in Los Angeles; Brentwood, Calif.; Malibu, Calif.; South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Calif., and Las Vegas.

John Eshaya, vice president of women’s wear at Ron Herman said, “The smaller bags work well with the little dresses everyone is wearing, and in L.A., every woman also needs a giant bag. What I like about this collection is that it’s limited, so women can feel as though they are collecting a special vintage piece

Coach had approached Stanley and Ehrlich last spring.

“Our dream has always been to make Miss Davenporte into a larger lifestyle brand, like Coach,” said Ehrlich. “We hope these bags, which we chose from Coach’s archives, turn into classic shapes like Chanel or Fendi bags.”

For his part, Reed Krakoff said he wanted to collaborate with Stanley and Ehrlich when he saw their debut collection for spring 2006. “It exemplifies that great combination of old Hollywood glamour and modern effortlessness. Their sensibilities complemented the classic styles and casual sophistication of Coach.”

Of course, Krakoff said he views the duo as both designers and stylists. As stylists, their access to celebrity clients such as Penélope Cruz, Jessica Biel and Nicole Richie probably doesn’t hurt.

Their client Jennifer Morrison was on hand wearing a Miss Davenporte dress and bag, mingling with guests Mandy Moore, Amber Tamblyn, Erin Wasson, Ivana Milicevic, Debra Messing, and a slew of others.
