Mary J Blige makes worlds’ most beautiful list.

Posted by v on April 30, 2008

I know there are many, many worthy celebrities on this list but I LIKE  Mary J. Blige and was particularly pleased to see she made the list. Congratulations, not that you need the validation.

MARY J. BLIGE

“I’m at my most beautiful when I’m in a good mood, not dealing with any drama, and feeling healthy,” says the singer, 37. But when she wants to get glam in a pinch, Blige has a quick beauty tip. “I put on eyeliner and mascara and some liner on my mouth and some gloss in the middle, and that’s the perfect five-minute face.”

Cleaning out your closet Daphne Guinness style.

Posted by v on April 30, 2008

Auction: 29th April 2008 at 2pm
The sale comprises more than 250 lots of cutting edge designer-wear from vintage to the present day by luminaries such as Yves Saint Laurent, Comme des Garcons, Azzedine Alaia, Gucci, Prada, Lanvin, Versace, Valentino, Mc Queen, Dolce & Gabbana. The clothes are accompanied by accessories including sunglasses, bags, and hundreds of pairs of shoes (many unworn) by Louboutin, YSL, Dior which range from teetering killer stiletto heels to elevated platforms, in every colour and material imaginable.

I bet you thought you had a fabulous wardrobe. For most of us, cleaning out your wardrobe would involve giving to charity but for Daphne Guinness, on the other hand, it seems to involve hiring a van, carefully cataloguing each item and shipping it off to be auctioned for charity.

Daphne, who used to be married to a Greek shipping heir, yesterday auctioned off 250 designer lots for the Womankind charity. Up for grabs was everything from sky-high Christian Dior wedges to an Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche dress. Meanwhile, assorted Chanel knitwear or hauls of 25 bags were up for grabs. A pair of Alexander McQueen boots sold for £3,600, and a black-silk wrap over Dolce and Gabbana evening coat went for £5,000 - well above their estimates. The final figure from the auction has yet to be calculated, but the charity says they estimate the final donation could be as much as £50,000. Nearly everything went for far more than the highest estimates at an exciting event - featured throughout the style pages - where bids in the room were often beaten by E-bay customers or clients on the phone.

If these are  castoffs, what on earth did she decide to keep? My head is spinning. Don’t miss your next fab auction, go to Kerrytaylor auctions

Louis Vuitton and Nadia Plesner lawsuit.

Posted by v on April 30, 2008

Seriously, can’t we all just get along?

Juicy Couture is suing Victoria Secret over the Pink label trademark. .Their latest lawsuit accuses Victoria’s Secret of capitalizing on this ingenious idea to sell its Pink line. The company is also upset Victoria’s Secret packages clothing in the shape of lollipops, bonbons, and ice-cream cones, much like Juicy Couture’s Sweet Shoppe. The Daily News reports the company wants Victoria’s Secret to destroy all offending merchandise and cough up three times the profits it made on the clothes.
Juicy recently sued juicycampus.com for trademark infringement, and previously sued Jewish Website and clothing company Jewcy. Can’t we all just get along?
Psst! Juicy, I know so many companies that use trademarks similar to yours, sometimes I get confused. Will you go after them all?? I guess you will.
Now to an actual David and Goliath story.

When I first heard of this, via Fashionista, my heart went out to the artist Nadia Plesner. I dont know how she thinks she can take on LVMH. I like Louis Vuitton as much as the next person (maybe a little too much) but I also know my heart is in the right place. Sweetie, Some are guilty for the problems in the world. All of us bear responsibility but Louis Vuitton is not responsible for Darfur.  They cannot be portrayed in that light.

On her site, she has the letters from Louis Vutton telling her to cease and desist. She now has several lawyers helping her. I certainly hope they are all pro bono. Here is what she says “However, I stand up for my artistic freedom to express my view of the world as I see it without restrictions from anybody.” How she hopes to take on a juggernaut like Louis Vuitton interests me. I hope like David and Goliath and for her sake, there will be a winning solution for her.

I was initially impresed by the fact that 100% profits go to charity but found out only 30% of her profits actually go to charity. She is pocketing 70%. Admittedly some of the money goes to expenses and all, but she is also making money off the genocide in Darfur.

CUSTOMS COUNTERFEIT BUST - LA

Customs officials inspecting two cargo containers at the Port of Los Angeles recently came across hundreds of counterfeit hats, shoes, blankets, wallets, wearing apparel and jewelry all bearing designer names.

The discoveries were made on two separate days, April 8 and 11, but all the merchandise was sent from the same company in China to the same buyer in Texas, said Christina Gamez, a spokesperson for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, on Tuesday. Gamez did not reveal the name of the supplier or the importer.

The value of the apprehended merchandise was placed at $1.3 million, but if they had been sold as authentic items, they would have fetched $38 million, customs officials said.

Seriously when you look at such staggering returns on the numbers, this is what? a 3,000% profit? Its almost worth it for the conterfeiters. This thing is not going to stop anytime soon. The counterfeit items bore labels such as Burberry, Giorgio Armani, Baby Phat and Dolce & Gabbana, as well as other prominent names. (Apparel News)

Posted by v on April 30, 2008

Before we tell you why you should, we must talk about MODELS AND THEIR SINGING CAREERS - Is this like singers and acting? They probably think they are so fabulous at one thing, they simply must try another.
Yet another model “drops” an album , Read New Yorks Cuts’ anthology of models and their singing careers

SATC premieres in London , SJP front and center

Posted by v on April 30, 2008

The countdown is almost over; Sex and the City: The Movie is out at the end of the month, and the publicity trail has begun!
A new set of movie posters have been released this week, showing Sarah Jessica Parker against the backdrop of Times Square.

Doing nothing to quash rumours of on-set ego battles, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, are no where to be seen on the promotional images, making SJP very much the focus. The new posters come in the same week as the announcement that the first premiere of the movie will controversially take place in London’s Leicester Square, on 12th May.
Causing uproar Stateside, with many arguing that the only place the film should be debuted is New York, representatives from New Line cinema released a statement this week claiming that London would be a far smaller affair than the NY event.

Lots of floral dresses, but love the shoes. SJP seems once again to be the only reel fashionista. Samantha is stuck in stiff belted suits which as we all know is not her forte. She also gets blood splashed on her white fur coat. Brady is all grown up but will there be a wedding?

Jade Jagger unveils her $250,000 ice pick

Posted by v on April 29, 2008

The quarter-million-dollar ice pick has a carbon steel blade, 18-karat white-gold hilt studded with 12 carats of brilliant-cut diamonds and 42 pieces of pale sapphire and is inlaid with a blue lapis lazuli. The handle is bound in twisted white gold thread and topped with a giant moonstone and lapis lazuli bead. “Lapis is a good, strong, masculine stone with a bit of intrigue,” Jade Jagger said. “I think it is underappreciated, and it’s actually rarer than diamond, so I put it at the top of the dagger like a globe.” Guests included Paris Hilton, Rachel Zoe, Bai Ling, Nicky Hilton - you get the picture.
Every well appointed bar needs one of those.
“There is finesse in everything,” Jagger explained earnestly before dinner. “Just like you can realize there is good salt and there is bad salt, there is amazing ice, and there is run-of-the-mill ice. So if you hand-carve good ice with a diamond-encrusted dagger, let me tell you, your drink tastes better.”
We always knew that! Come on Jade, especially at $250,000. When you crush with a regular ice pick, ugh, disgusting.
A “cheaper” version, with just 12 carats of white topaz and 42 pieces of aquamarine, costs $10,000. (Both are available at Harrods in London, should you find yourself with more money than common sense.) It was unveiled, as such things are wont to be, via a Jermaine Browne-choreographed ritual dance that culminated in four dancers clad in gray silk shirt dresses by Jagger’s Jezebel line, each taking half-hearted stabs at an ice block the size of a refrigerator. (LA Times)
Love the dress though.  I could afford that, maybe? Will keep you posted on that line.

Frances Bean Cobain as Chanel model … apparently not!!!

Posted by v on April 29, 2008

On the subject of creepy adults, here’s another one.

Despite still being at school, 15-year-old Frances, whose father was rock star Kurt Cobain – famous for grunge rock anthems such as Smells Like Teen Spirit before his suicide in 1991 – has already appeared in a number of upmarket American magazines. “She’s only young, but there’s a lot of interest in Frances,” says a friend. “She is incredibly pretty and has the most perfect porcelain skin.

“She and her mother are having talks with Karl about Frances appearing in his next ad campaign. “Courtney is concerned about Frances pursuing a catwalk career at such a young age, so she has been involved in all the talks so far.” Mind you, the news that Lagerfeld is so taken with Frances might come as an unwelcome surprise to po-faced actress Keira Knightley – who is the current face of the French fashion house’s Coco Mademoiselle perfume.

UPDATE: Vogue magazine has reported that contrary to press reports,Cobain is not being wood for a Chanel spot.

Miley Cyrus - Bedsheet or satin stole - The real issue?

Posted by v on April 29, 2008

If you have not heard this story, then lucky you, don’t get involved. I am fairly broad minded about things but I found that picture a little unsettling and what is a 15 year old doing in Vanity Fair in the first place?. Why would any grown folk be interested in Hannah Montana. It just looked really weird. It reminded of pictures taken by pedophiles that you see on Nancy Grace.
Considering Vanity Fair got 4 million hits to their website and their name was on everybodys lips, they’re now hitting back very hard.Their biggest gripe seems to be about the fact that it was a duchess satin stole and not a bedsheet.

No one was more confounded than the magazine’s fashion and style director, Michael Roberts, who styled the shoot by Annie Leibovitz. “I’m European. I come from London, I lived in Paris, and I just find it extraordinary that this has been blown up like this,” he told WWD.
He continued, “The whole kiddie porn prurient angle seems to be worryingly sour grapes from other magazines that didn’t get a picture like this…teenagers can be seen on TV and in the cinema in the most prurient ways, and then a photograph which is for all intents and purposes innocent is blown out of portion and condemned as some ridiculous apotheosis.
Yeah, sure, everybody is jealous.
He discusses the change of heart “”Maybe Vanity Fair is a far too sophisticated media outlet for her. Maybe she’s better off in those teen magazines. We don’t do cheesy teen pictures. We do chic pictures and pictures that are beautiful portraits by probably the leading portrait photographer of our age.”

You think???? Vanity Fair does really weird covers with adults that trouble me and somehow you think bringing a child into this environment would actually have worked out under any circumstances? Shame on you all. Her parents, Vanity Fair , Hannah Montana, everyone. They all will do anything for fame.

Cyrus and child molester innuendos aside, there’s also the deeply upsetting matter of the bedsheet: He objected to the characterization of Cyrus’ attire as a bedsheet. “It’s a duchess satin stole, Champagne, specially made — I had several made for different photo shoots. I thought this one was really appropriate. It’s about 83 inches long. She’s not wrapped in something skimpy. Read more if you care (WWD)

On the topic of creepy child stuff, read our next post, Lagerfeld wants Frances Bean Cobain for Chanel. Oh Lord! where will this all end?

The Pashmina returns- Where on earth did it go?

Posted by v on April 28, 2008

Obviously, I am a fashion arbiter elegantiarum, unless of course I did not know I was truly behind the times.  In France, I loved watching the kids as the school day ended. Kids as young as 6 were sporting scarves round their necks. Tres chic. Somehow I don’t see them saying “Est-ce que c’est à la mode ou non?”. Is this in or out?.

However, according to the Times of London, they are back. Ahem, I kind of think even Oprah featured them not too long ago, teaching her audience how to tie them. As with anything Oprah does, even when she raises her coffee mug to sip, it eliciting gasps of wonder and bewilderment. I remember cringing, this is 2008, these are simple tie techniques. I am not hating on oprah, if you missed it, please go here. The trick we are told, is to fold into a big triangle at the front and tied, Middle-Eastern style. We at least like one thing from the Middle East, thats progress.

Sites such as FORZIERI.com have truly luxurious scarves but if those are too rich for your blood, try the Love quotes linen scarves from Tobi

Each of these finely fringed scarves comes with a tag that contains a love quote from a famous person, promoting a heartwarming message. Even better, 10% of Love Quotes’ net profits go to international children’s charities. Layer one of these vibrant scarves around your neck or wear it as a wrap over the shoulders, and feel warm and fuzzy on the inside and out.

The Times of London continues :”As observed in this very column a while ago, the pashmina is back – and whereas before it ended up looking twee and yummy mumsy, this time it’s exuding a vague, rock’n’roll grunginess. Not to be confused with pashminas of yore, which were pretty and pastel and draped across shoulders, mark II is wound round the neck and dangles down the front, school-of-Burberry style, as a deliberate counterpoint to summer’s ultra-feminine ruffles fest. If you’re aiming for androgynous tailoring, the kinda-depressed pashmina will ensure you don’t look too severe. If you’re a celebrity, you could wear one with an evening dress to show you’re cool. Think of it as a new kind of necklace, but only if it helps. Read more ( times uk)
