Fighting Fakes

Posted by v on April 8, 2008

Louis Vuitton seems well equipped to fight counterfeiters, especially in New York, Europe etc but what about the counterfeiters in the small towns, the small cities. I know especially of a mall in suburbia where a particular store sells Lous Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci and Fendi fakes- In the Mall!!!
“It’s a gray economy that escapes all rules of normal labor and normal economic rules and taxations, so it’s a bad thing for every state in the world. Secondly, it’s bad for any kind of creativity, research and development, because if you don’t protect intellectual property, why should people dedicate time and energy to create?” says their CEO, Carcelle.

Since 2003, Louis Vuitton has conducted over 30,000 raids against individuals or companies selling fake Vuitton merchandise. Last year alone, the firm directed more than 7,600 raids worldwide, often seizing the fake merchandise and even the manufacturing tools in order to prevent factories from returning to producing counterfeits. In addition, more than 24,000 legal proceedings were initiated on behalf of Vuitton last year, and over 750 Web sites selling fakes were forced to shut down.
“It’s an ongoing process,” Carcelle said. “If you ask people working against the drug trade, it’s a daily thing of controlling the borders, investigating the workshops and controlling the stores, or the tenants and landlords.”
Even though at first, I think this is an exercise in futility, they must continue to fight to protect their property as thier CEO indicates. I would hate to work hard on something and then after it was extremely successful, some bottom feeders arrive to hijack my success.
On the other hand, the merchandise is so expensive and I guess some people really feel the need to posess something of such value and prestige, even though they could never afford it.

The only way to tell the difference between  an authentic piece and a fake is to buy from an authorized dealer. Buy from the source!. I feel like I am losing valuable brain cells if I read any article about spotting the difference between a real item and a counterfeit. Its fake if you bought it from Eduardo or Mohammed.

This is a two part post. Take part in our quiz about counterfeits. You won’t need to give any info about yourself. Have fun!

Is the NFL snubbing Jason Taylor on “Dancing with the Stars”??

Posted by v on April 8, 2008

I love football, among any other things. I am also currently watching Dancing with the Stars. Carrie Ann and the other girls’ wardrobe get better each season, Nice.
Now to Jason Taylor, big man, graceful man and the conspicously absent NFL. Absent in what I consider a huge PR deal for the league if they would just take advantage of it.

You would think after the Michael Vick incident, they would welcome the chance to promote the Association. I live with football players, they are also big men 6ft 5 and 265Ibs during the season , I know they like to dance, are quite nimble on their feet so there should be nothing shameful about big football players dancing - or should there be?

The NFL is certainly acting like it should be. If you go on their website, there is nothing about Jason Taylor on Dancing with the Stars, their biggest PR coup to date. I don’t get it. Guaranteed they did not support Emmitt Smith either but he was retired.
In the NFL, to be recognizable, you must be really really bad or the announcers must really really like you.
Kudos to Jason Taylor, with or without the NFL, he has come out from under the helmet to become a name on the lips of everyone and he makes ballroom dancing rather sexy.

So, heres my challenge to the NFL, act like real men and support one of your own.

Ralph Lauren to outfit Beijing Olympians…. not so good idea!

Posted by v on April 8, 2008

I wonder how this is going to play out with the demonstrations in Paris and everything. The flame has been put out four times!! I personally find Chinas role in Tibet reprehensible and the torch must not be allowed to pass through Tibet but that matter is not going to be addressed here.
Protesters in Paris and London were not just drawing attention to China’s oppression in Tibet but they were speaking out against its dismal record of support for the genocide in Darfur and the long-running military dictatorship in Burma. Hopefully, global corporations (e.g Coca Cola and Samsung) and now Ralph Lauren may pause and re-consider their involvement with the opening ceremony after the hostile reaction they received for aligning themselves with the Chinese toughs in blue tracksuits.

(NEW YORK) Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. has been named the official outfitter for the U.S. team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The iconic American label will outfit approximately 1,500 American athletes at both opening and closing ceremonies, as well as provide custom wardrobes for their off-time in Olympic Village venues.

The billion-dollar American apparel firm signed a contract with the U.S. Olympic Committee last week to replace Canadian apparel company Roots Ltd., which had outfitted the U.S. team for the past three Olympic Games and was originally scheduled to continue through 2008. The partnership dissolved in January when the USOC concluded that the Roots looks were too informal. Awwwwww!
Polo’s new Olympics deal, which includes the Beijing Paralympics in September, is the latest honor ????? for the fashion brand. In 2005, the company signed a four-year partnership making Polo the official apparel sponsor of the U.S. Open through 2008, outfitting all on-court ball persons and officials. A year later, Polo Ralph Lauren became the first official outfitter of Wimbledon, redesigning the outfits for ballboys, line and court judges, and the Wimbledon logo was adapted for this purpose. The company also continues to sponsor a roster of U.S. professional golfers, including Tom Watson, David Love III, Luke Donald, Jonathan Byrd, and Morgan Pressel.

If the Beijing Games are to have a chance of being a sporting event, and not a grotesque charade, then leaders have to toughen up, demonstrate leadership and threaten a boycott of the opening ceremony, otherwise Mr. Lauren might find he is being boycotted and he may not survive this PR blunder and disaster.
Just my opinion!
