Going Grecian (dresses)… Gladiators (sandals), Fashion steps back in time.

Posted by v on April 9, 2008

With all its mixed metaphors, Fashion seems determined to go classical. The gladiator sandals, and now the Grecian dresses.

Fashion classicists Madame Vionnet and Madame Grès produced glorious Grecian gowns in the 1920s and 1930s, their consummate tailoring skills producing apparently effortlessly flowing drapery. The look has subsequently been reinvented every decade, with the process speeding up in the 21st century, as the whirligig of style spins faster.

By the time the celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe got her hands on it, a couple of years ago, it had become a kind of shorthand employed in fast-track iconography; a kick-start in helping Hollywood candy-girls like Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan and Mischa Barton seem a little less disposable than might have otherwise been the case. Thus Zoe (also known as ‘the Queen of the Underworld’) summed up her style mantra to Vogue as ‘Mod meets Grecian. A lot of gold and a lot of bronze, shimmer and glamour, but relaxed glamour, very unstructured…’

Even if you’re not ready to go for full-on goddess garb, there’s an array of Roman sandals and gladiator boots available in the shops this season. Actually, they were around last summer, too, and the year before that, but clearly there’s an undiminished appetite for them, both on the high street and the catwalk. Balenciaga, Gaultier and Givenchy have sent out increasingly ferocious-looking versions - including some expensively elaborate, knee-high designs, which suggest that urban warfare is an imminent threat, and that women must dress as warriors to survive in the 21st century.

Choosing the right sunglasses for your face

Posted by v on April 9, 2008

GETTING THE RIGHT FIT
Now that summer is almost here, lets turn our attention to Sunglasses. There are no hard and fast rules, you like it, you buy it, but here are suggestions you can arm yourself with before you go shopping. After all, knowledge is power.
The sunglass size should be in proportion with the face size. (Nicole Richie and the Olsen twins dont seem to care about this and its up to you).
This means that smaller sunglasses are best for smaller faces; larger sunglasses for larger faces. The frame shape should contrast with, that is, be the opposite of, the shape of the face.
These tips must not be taken as rules but they can help you to choose your right frame.

Oval face
Almost any style works for oval face. Experiment with the latest looks, such as wraparounds or shields. Square shaped frames with gently rounded edges and higher temples also look good on an oval face.
Frame suggestions : Any frame shape

Round face
Frames should make the face appear longer and thinner.

In general, look for frames equal to or slightly wider than the broadest part of the face.
Minimize the curves and add definition with soft, angular, rectangular styles or double brow styles. Higher temples will create a longer profile. Sunglasses with brow bars also pull the eye upward, making the face appear longer.
Frame suggestions : Wider frames with angular / rectangular styles

Diamond shape
This face shape has wide or high cheekbones with a narrow forehead and chin. Oval sunglasses will soften the contour of the face, although softly curved square frames will work as well. Make sure the styles are no wider than the top of the cheekbones.
Frame suggestions : Oval, Square, Rimless

Square face
This face shape consists of a strong jawline, a broad forehead and wide cheekbones. Reduce the angles with soft, curvy styles that will give the face some definition such as cat-eye styles. The classic ovals also works well for this face shape.
Frame suggestions : Oval, Round, Cat Eyes

Oblong face
Widen and shorten the face with sunglass styles that do not extend beyond the widest part of the face. Round or square shapes will look great on this face. Frames with short horizontal and long vertical lines also work. Decorative or contrasting temples add width to the face.
Frame suggestions : Round, Square

Triangle shape
This face has a narrow jaw and a wide forehead. Soften the lower portion of the face by accenting the eye area. Styles such as cat- eyes should angle outward at the top corner and be wide enough to balance the jawline. You can also try metal frames with rimless bottoms.

Frame suggestions : Frames with a Straight Top Line, Cat Eyes SKINPale complexionsTry lightweight frames or those with a touch of colour such as rose or amber. Tortoiseshell frames suit fair complexions (avoid darker versions) but clear, blue or green tinged frames tend to drain colour from cheeks.

COMPLEXIONS
Dark complexions
Olive, Mediterranean, Golden or Asian skin and dark hair can look stunning in silver, gold or clear frames – but avoid black which can be too heavy.
Black Skins
All metallic frames suit black skins and amber often works well – be very careful with black frames, which can look spectacular or awful!
HAIR
Soft & curly
Enhanced by delicate shapes, rimless frames and translucent colours
Very curly
Choose a frame that follows your hairline.
Classic small frames are advisable
ShortGeometric frames, or rounder frames look best.
Very shortBold colours and designs, as well as decorative styles
Long hair
Try the frames with both your hair up and down, as the change in style may alter the look of the frames

Ten ways to sniff out a liar..

Posted by v on April 9, 2008

courtesy: Forbes.com

Of all stinging invectives, being called a liar is near the top. Fact is, though, if bona fide lie detectors existed, we’d all be guilty as charged.

According to an oft-cited 1996 University of Virginia study led by psychologist Bella DePaulo, lying is part of the human condition. Over the course of one week, DePaulo and her colleagues asked 147 participants, aged 18 to 71, to record in a diary all of their social interactions and all of the lies they told during them. On average, each person lied just over 10 times, and only seven participants claimed to have been completely honest.

The truth, according to social psychologist Leonard Saxe, director of the Steinhardt Social Research Institute at Brandeis University, is that the right pressures or incentives will cause anybody to lie.

For all the Eliot Spitzers, Jeffrey Skillings and Bill Clintons in the world, studies show that men and women lie with equal frequency. One difference, according to a 2002 University of Massachusetts study conducted by psychologist Robert Feldman: Women are more likely to lie to make other people feel good, while men tend to lie to make themselves look better.

When telling the truth, people often make hand gestures to the rhythm of their speech. Hands emphasize points or phrases–a natural and compelling technique when they actually believe the points they’re making. The less certain will keep gesticulations in check, says Hancock.

Janet Jackson - “dont call it a comeback”

Posted by v on April 9, 2008

Oh yes, Janet still has it, whether her records go platinum or not. Janet is on the April cover of Ebony magazine looking more than fierce.

Don’t call it a come back,” says Grammy Award winner and pop music icon Janet Jackson about her latest CD, Discipline. She tells EBONY magazine in the April issue, “I’m not ready to retire…I enjoy what I do, and I don’t think it is time for me to kick back on an island and do nothing all day.”  In an all-white, breathtaking photo shoot conducted in New York, “Miss Jackson” reveals her thoughts on making it in this business, leaving Virgin Records and her love for Jermaine Dupri. “I was with Virgin for so long, and they were really family,” she says of the label that signed her to an $80 million contract in 1991. “In the end, it was not the same feeling or energy or ideas, and it was just not the place for me.”

Get your copy, I will. Watch the videoshoot and if you can, pause on the Purple Loboutins in the picture. To seriously die for.
