Going Grecian (dresses)… Gladiators (sandals), Fashion steps back in time.

With all its mixed metaphors, Fashion seems determined to go classical. The gladiator sandals, and now the Grecian dresses.
Fashion classicists Madame Vionnet and Madame Grès produced glorious Grecian gowns in the 1920s and 1930s, their consummate tailoring skills producing apparently effortlessly flowing drapery. The look has subsequently been reinvented every decade, with the process speeding up in the 21st century, as the whirligig of style spins faster.
By the time the celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe got her hands on it, a couple of years ago, it had become a kind of shorthand employed in fast-track iconography; a kick-start in helping Hollywood candy-girls like Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan and Mischa Barton seem a little less disposable than might have otherwise been the case. Thus Zoe (also known as ‘the Queen of the Underworld’) summed up her style mantra to Vogue as ‘Mod meets Grecian. A lot of gold and a lot of bronze, shimmer and glamour, but relaxed glamour, very unstructured…’

Even if you’re not ready to go for full-on goddess garb, there’s an array of Roman sandals and gladiator boots available in the shops this season. Actually, they were around last summer, too, and the year before that, but clearly there’s an undiminished appetite for them, both on the high street and the catwalk. Balenciaga, Gaultier and Givenchy have sent out increasingly ferocious-looking versions - including some expensively elaborate, knee-high designs, which suggest that urban warfare is an imminent threat, and that women must dress as warriors to survive in the 21st century.
