Madonna madness in Manhattan - Still got it.

Posted by v on May 1, 2008

NEW YORK) Madonna pledged her allegiance to Dolce & Gabbana Wednesday night, when she staged a free promotional concert at the Roseland Ballroom clad almost exclusively in the designer’s duds.

The singer opened the show in a black satin tailcoat with pink lining, which she (quickly) removed to reveal a black lace top with puffed sleeves. She quickly stripped that outfit off to reveal a corset and Swarovski crystal-studded satin pants and a black nylon vest with “Hard Candy” written in Swarovski crystals. Her dancers wore custom Dolce & Gabbana tracksuits, some featuring a leopard print, which they alternated with Adidas ensembles.  (fashion weekly)

“What’d you think this was, a Rolling Stones concert?” asked Madonna, who’d just done the opening lick of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” halfway into a six-song gig at Roseland in Manhattan Wednesday night. “Yeah, well, f–k that.”

The occasion was the release of her new album, “Hard Candy,” which came out Tuesday, and if the venue was small, the production surrounding it was not. She arrived on a throne to a medley of 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop,” Bow Wow Wow’s “I Want Candy” and Cameo’s “Candy” before launching into her own song, “Candy Shop.” After that, she picked up her guitar for “Miles Away,” about a woman whose partner “has the biggest heart, when we’re 6,000 miles apart.”

The biggest roar during the show came moments later, when Madonna, clad in Dolce & Gabbana athletic gear, launched into her single, “4 Minutes,” and was joined on stage by the man who wrote, produced and sang it with her, Justin Timberlake. “I feel like the luckiest girl in the world,” she said afterward, referring to Timberlake and the album’s other collaborators, Timbaland and Pharrell Williams. SATC cast - tightlipped on Oprah

Posted by v on May 1, 2008

The cast of Sex and the City stayed more than tightlipped about the upcoming movie. They were more open than their private lives than they were about the movie. For the audience members who got to watch most of the movie, all I can say is Lucky you!

The ladies say keeping the film’s plotlines under wraps has been a challenge since production began in the summer of 2007. During their four-month shoot in New York City, hundreds of fans flocked to the set every day to watch them film scenes. “There were fans on both sides of the street,” Kristin says. “I felt like a Beatle.” Some even brought pens and paper to write down the stars’ dialogue!

At least, we know the fashion will still delight. Hollywood stylist Patricia Fields, the woman responsible for the show’s cutting-edge wardrobe, started planning the looks months before shooting began. In all, Patricia says there were 300 wardrobe changes throughout the film. Fashionista Carrie Bradshaw alone wore 81 different outfits!
One accessory used often in the film was the belt. “Belts were very, very important. The belt gives the shape, so I wrapped everybody in belts,” Patricia says. “I think it’s the new silhouette that we’ll see in Sex and the City.”

Oh, and Mr. Big. A little disappointing to see his love, but its all good.

He plays a suave New Yorker on the big screen and a gritty detective on television, but Chris’s favorite role is off-screen—as a new dad! In January 2008, Chris and actress Tara Wilson welcomed their son, Orion Christopher, into the world. (Oprah.com)

Lagerfeld , Bush and Jolie on Times’ 100 most influential list

Posted by v on May 1, 2008

KARL LAGERFELD and French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld have secured coveted spots in the Time list of 100 influentials.

“Before Karl, we all looked to couture for inspiration and direction,” Zaha Hadid says in the issue. “Now, through his work, fashion originates from the street, the media - anywhere. This has resulted in exciting collections that are provocative and sensual.”

“His unrelenting experimentation in fashion, art and photography offers us endless possibilities, yet is always grounded and relevant,” she continues. “There are no simple formulas, no global solutions, and little repetition.”

Hedi Slimane praises Roitfeld for her ability to “mix street culture and society, always avoiding the caricatures that can define both worlds”, while Marc Jacobs fetes the work of Louis Vuitton collaborator Takashi Murakami, who also made this year’s eagerly-aniticpated list.

Tyra Bank, Oprah, Angelina Jolie, Maria Carey, Goerge Clooney also make the list. Click here for complete list of 100

Are Luxury items worth it anymore??

Posted by v on May 1, 2008

Driving to the airport, I see a girl in a t.shirt and jeans with a “Hermes Birkin” bag. It was an obvious knockoff. I  posted about Sarah Jessica Parkers $10 dress before I left for the airport, so ultimately I started to wonder about commerce and luxury.  Jade Jaggers’ quarter million dollar dagger, (I still dont get it) and the rise of newly moneyed  people who dont quite get the concept of luxury.

Its not luxurious if everybody has it or if you want it because you know who has one. That is to say, a luxury good may become a normal good or even an inferior good at different income levels, e.g. a wealthy person stops buying increasing numbers of luxury cars for his automobile collection to start collecting airplanes (at such an income level, the luxury car would become an inferior good). (wikipedia) The fact that you have a Bentley does not instantly confer legitimacy to your cause. Are you listening, Kim Kardashian.

The status of owning luxury brands is important for the affluent or high net worth consumer, as they feel it expresses their class or self-expression. Advertising also ensures that other people who cannot afford the luxury item are nonetheless aware of its expense, which is essential to conferring the status that the consumption of luxury promises.

The global business pressures on high-end fashion—the weak dollar, where to manufacture the stuff, how to recognize and develop new market is transforming luxury. If the Chinese can make a fab knockoff, for a fraction of the price, using relatively quality materials, then where is the beef?.

I think more and more, we’ll see good stuff that more and more doesn’t impress us, either because of the transparently thin manufacturing quality or the design values. Is it enough these days, that the item bears a name? or that carrying the item confers instant status on its wearer? The fact that a celebrity has it, does this lend any form of credibility to the product? This, ladies and gentlemen is ultimately the business of fashion.  Sell, sell, sell! and then sell some more.

These supposedly high end companies can get away with it. It becomes ultimately who can produce the gitziest marketing campaigns.  Throw on the celebs and models, make a lot of noise, and, voila!—here is fashion. The need to sell, produce some images, connect, and valuate the experience pervades everything. Then, we buy this pitch.

The term luxury, is so useless and phony these days. It’s used nowadays to sell almost anything, often something cheesy, like a luxury pet bed.  Its thrown around almost as much as the word “classy”. I could never figure out the juxtapositioning of the two words “classy dame” or “classy broad”.   So much of luxury items are so badly made, mass produced and you begin to wonder where to really spend your hard earned money.  You truly begin to wonder, Is it worth it?

#1 at $35m - Gisele tops Forbes Top Earning Models.

Posted by v on May 1, 2008

In the words of supermodel and Project Runway host Heidi Klum: In fashion, one day you’re in and the next you’re out. One could say the same about Forbes.com’s 2008 list of the World’s Top-Earning Models. Some beauties moved up, some down, some off, a few on.

Gisele Bundchen, still entrenched firmly in the No. 1 spot with an estimated $35 million in earnings, more than double the $14 million banked by Heidi Klum, who came in second. The 15 models on our list were ranked primarily by estimated earnings over the past 12 months.

Rounding out the top five are usual suspects Heidi Klum ($14 million), Kate Moss ($7.5 million), Adriana Lima ($7 million) and surprise addition Doutzen Kroes ($6 million). The 23-year-old honey from Holland made a long-legged leap up the charts from her second-to-last position last year. In 2008, the Calvin Klein and L’Oréal face expanded her deals and also hit the modeling mother lode: a Victoria’s Secret contract. WhereTyra at??

How the heck did Gisele make $35m? Bundchen may have ended her Victoria’s Secret run, but her $5 million a year record-setting contract didn’t expire until the end of December 2007, allowing much of it to be included in this year’s tally. Even without the lingerie giant, the Brazilian bombshell continues to bag multiyear, multimillion-dollar contracts, most notably as the new face of Pantene and a cosmetics powerhouse that can’t be named until July. Her line of Grendene sandals, Ipanema by Gisele, banks her about $6 million a year.(Forbes)

Sarah J. Parker in her $10 dress.

Posted by v on May 1, 2008

I am sure she has a point to make but somehow I don’t think Ms. Parker will be wearing this dress twice. Celebrities, you would think they did not have enough money already. All in an effort to drum up sales, she apparently designed this dress for Bitten. Oh Joy!

The old Tower Records space a few blocks away on Broadway, for two decades the spot for adolescent reveries of dance, pop and punk, has been leased by Steve & Barry’s, a clothing chain where everything costs less than $10.

Steve & Barry’s is manna, a store that sells stylish celebrity-branded clothes at prices that are absurdly inexpensive, lower than those at Old Navy, H & M or Forever 21, undercutting even Wal-Mart by as much as half.

The question on everyone’s lips: How do they make a decent dress or a jacket, with sleeves, or a pair of functioning shoes for $8.98? By making them in third world countries, thats how. By manufacturing in countries like China, India, Madagascar and more than 20 others.

Mr. Shore and Mr. Prevor, (founders of Steve& Barrys)  dressed in chinos and rumpled shirts, frequently described the company as “the Google of fashion” and rattled off several ways they had devised to make a high-quality product at the low prices. I guess H&M is quaking in its Swedish boots. At least with their stuff, you can wear it three times. (nytimes)

Heidi Klum launches collection at Bloomingdales, LA

Posted by v on May 1, 2008

I am not hating, but isn’t this woman known for being half naked? Why is she a fashion leader?. Just wondering…. Granted I should look so hot after three children.

Photos: Getty Images

Gorgeous star Heidi Klum - today revealed as the 2nd highest-earning supermodel in the world ? looked stunning in skinny jeans at the launch of her new collection, Heidi Klum for Jordache, at Bloomingdales in LA.

Klum provided inspiration for the line from her own wardrobe, supplying Jordache with some of her favorite pieces. Comfort was a key for Klum, who envisioned the line as something that busy young mothers like herself could wear.
“She was very sensitive to wanting the line to have a sexy edginess, but not be too revealing,” Berlinger said. “She paid a lot of attention to details.”
The theme of the initial 20-piece collection, Naughty and Nice, came directly from Klum. There’s an emphasis on premium denim, which retails for $140 to $170. Blouses, luxury knit tops, sundresses and embellished tops will also be part of the line and retail for $80 to $250.

Naomi Campbell is pretty on Ugly Betty.

Posted by v on May 1, 2008

Naomi Campbell donned vertiginous wedge trainers, super-short hotpants and bright red tights for her guest-appearance on an upcoming episode of Ugly Betty.

Reports say that Naomi, well known for her irascible temperament, was nothing but well-behaved and professional – even digging into a big lunch and joking around with cast members.

In fact, Naomi was even happy to play up to her reputation for mobile phone-throwing, and try to strike fear into her opponents as she posed in a mock-theratening manner with her mobile on the field. She tells of how she hit the ball so hard while training that the ball broke in half. Way to take your craft seriously.

Recognise her perilously high trainers? That’s because they’re identical to those worn by Victoria Beckham when she took to the baseball field to throw the first pitch at the LA Dodgers game last year. (marieclaireuk)

The collection is also inspired by a mix of Oriental, Asian and African designs to create a modern ethnic look. 1920’s oriental patterns and embellished shirts, tunics and dresses worn with harem pants or linen and khaki separates complete the look and combines fashion history and global street style from all over the world in a single trend.
