Mad for Loubous- Patti Labelle / Naomi Campbelle stop by.

Posted by v on May 2, 2008

I have heard of this mad frenzied love women have for Christian Louboutin shoes. This is a love I cannot experience as sadly I am a 41 or 41.5. Okay, 42! (At least Chanel makes 12s). I can always be a vicarious consumer anyway hence my rapt attention and envy at Oprahs gift of Loboutins from J. Seinfeld. I just thought people were so jealous they couldn’t have those shoes. I watch the soles of her shoes like a simpleton everytime she crosses her legs. Never mind what’s on top sometimes, its the soles I love. Enjoy! Sigh!, even the store is beautiful.

This combination of raw sex and superior architecture inspires in Louboutin fans an obsessive devotion. Simon Doonan, the creative director of Barneys New York, recently commented in The New Yorker: “Louboutin girls are very determined. You get the sense if they had an X-Acto knife and some margarine they’d do whatever they could to get that boot on.” writes the New York Times

“I lusted more realistically after the Pigalle: five-inch pony-hair pumps subversively dyed into Vietnam-era jungle camouflage, for a $20 Ho Chi Minh effect ($720). They seemed all the more deviant going into our sixth year of desert warfare. Subconscious Paris Hilton voice-over: Nooo, I don’t want Iraqi Freedom! I’m going to kill myself if you don’t have Tet Offensive in a 38! I tried them. The Pigalle is not for wearing, but it is the most eloquent visual argument against capitalism since the 19th-century cotton mill”. (NY Times).

LOUBOUTIN AT BARNEYS NEW YORK

Christian Loboutin made an appearance at Barneys New York according to Fashion Weekly Daily to frenzied devotees like Patti Labelle. As the congenial cobbler signed his creations with nearly a dozen shades of markers for four hours straight, the store’s fourth floor registers rang with excitement as recognizable faces dropped by to say bonjour. The most dramatic entrance came courtesy of shoe addict Patti LaBelle. The dapper diva stormed the fourth floor in full hair and makeup accompanied by an oversized, worn blue Louis Vuitton luggage piece filled with approximately 12 pairs of iconic Louboutin collectibles she’d amassed over the years. “I was surprised to see her,” Louboutin later quipped. “I wasn’t sure if she wanted me to sign everything. Thankfully, she didn’t.”

Rivaling Naomi for the title of most ardent Louboutin lover? An eight-year old boy named Brandon, who arrived with Converse in hand and confessed his dreams of becoming a fashion designer to the always-gracious Frenchman. Also on hand: a mix of attorneys, Fordham College students, South African housewives, and a political aide from Washington D.C. (FWD)

By the way, where does Paris Hilton get her shoes? She is a size 11, isn’t she???? Hey! Paris, Call me.

Superheroes, Fashion and Fantasy - DVF weighs in

Posted by v on May 2, 2008

“Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy,” (press release) which officially opens its doors at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute next Wednesday, offers a look at how fashion has interpreted superhero iconography both literally and metaphorically, and an almost comic-worthy show layout peppered with real action figures that could appeal to a democratic range of museum visitors.

This season, however, none other than Vogue’s Anna Wintour has declared the arrival of superhero chic.  The Met’s Costume Institute Gala, co-chaired by Anna herself along with Giorgio Armani, George Clooney, and Julia Roberts, will take place among displays of high fashion influenced by comic book characters.

I love the idea of the show as art but please let us mere mortals not incorporate costume wear into our daily lives. I hope people do not troop into  the  exhibit for months afterward and then take Diane Von Furstenbergs advice.

For this holiday season, von Furstenberg has collaborated with Warner Bros. Consumer Products on behalf of DC Comics and created a capsule collection of ready-to-wear, small leather goods and footwear that loosely takes its cues from the superheroine.
Maybe before I speak, I should wait and see the collection. However, shouldn’t some things just stay on TV?. As much as everywoman is wonder woman, we dont want our clothing to be influenced by DC Comics or be influenced by cartoon characters.
“Wonder Woman is the ultimate symbol of female strength, independence and freedom. When Warner Bros. approached me to collaborate, I immediately thought it was a fun idea that would reinforce my belief in women and commitment to their empowerment. The collection will inspire every woman to be the Wonder Woman she wants to be,” says von Furstenberg.

Yeah! Keep talking! you may convince us yet but seriously would you wear that dress, but in the meantime, go talk to them in Abu Dhabi. They are having serious issues with wonder womans’ costume.

Both Wonder Woman and Diane von Furstenberg are perennial symbols of strength and leadership. We are very pleased to be collaborating with DVF to capture the super powers of fashion and feminine power in this unique collection,” said Brad Globe, President, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. Yahoo News Oh No! the president of crass commercialism Inc. weighs in.

Update on the “ALL BLACK” Vogue Italia

Posted by v on May 2, 2008

NEW!!!! - Sneak pics - July Vogue Italia. The all black issue of Vogue Italia is said to hit newstands in July 2008. In the meantime, Vogue Italia pays homage to black models from 1966 to the present. Donyale Luna kicks off the parade being the first African American model to grace the cover of Vogue UK in March of 1966 and you thought it was Beverly Johnson, who does not even make the list.  Alek Wek, Naomi Campbell. Liya Kebede, Tyra Banks and Iman make the list. So does Denny Mendez, Miss Italia 1996. The Italian people’s choice was Denny Méndez, notwithstanding the objections of a pageant official who said, “A black girl can’t be Miss Italy. It’s not in the rules

There are lots of interesting facts about Donyale Luna, including an article in Time magazine published on 1 April 1966, “The Luna Year”, described the dramatically thin and tall (6′ 2″) model with the hallmark bright blue contact lenses and occasional blonde wig as “a new heavenly body who, because of her striking singularity, promises to remain on high for many a season. Donyale Luna, (born Peggy Ann Freeman) as she called herself, was unquestionably the hottest model in Europe at the moment. She makes Naomi pretty tame by all accounts.

In 1967, the mannequin manufacturer Adel Rootstein created a mannequin in Luna’s image, a follow-up to the company’s famous Twiggy mannequin of 1966. Interestingly, the whispered about cover girl Jourdan Dunn, is nowhere to be seen on this list. Hmm!  Chanel Iman (below), the gorgeous Korean/African American girl wonder makes the list. She was supposed to be a contender for the cover. We’ll keep watching. (Vogue Italia)
