Uma Thurman sues Lancome, Lancome countersues.

Posted by v on May 9, 2008

Could Uma Thurman be headed back to court? The actress on Friday filed a $15 million lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan against Lancôme for allegedly continuing to use her image in advertising even though her contract had expired.

According to Thurman’s lawyer, Bert Fields, her contract with Lancôme ended in 2004, but the brand has continued to use her image to sell products all around the world during the past four years. She is seeking $15 million from the French company, owned by L’Oréal.

But Lancome is fighting back – the company filed a suit of its own earlier this week in the State Supreme Court in Manhattan, saying it did not violate the contract and does not owe Thurman money.

A spokeswoman for L’Oréal said: “The use of Ms. Thurman’s image after her contract expired, however minor, was neither deliberate nor intentional. As this matter is currently in litigation, it is Lancôme’s policy not to comment on legal matters while they are in progress.” (WWD)

Kinda seems open and shut to us. Show her the money. Go Uma! but should you be in court so much?

Sailor chic … BUY OF THE DAY

Posted by v on May 9, 2008

Can I follow fashion, but stay faithful to my own ideas?” “Where will I find those elusive pieces that are both stylish and classic?” “Can I be on-trend without looking like mutton dressed as lamb?”
There is one major fashion story for summer that provides the solution: nautical chic. The red, white and blue combination is as reliable as the tide - for good reason. It streamlines your silhouette - and it’s ageless.

Below are similar interpretations of sailor pants. One is a splurge and the other is a steal. Click on all items for full product display.
Sailor pants by Spiegel $44.99. (We dont recommend the gold shoes, find them a little heavy for the outfit.)

 Kate Spade Isla $179.00

OUR BUY OF THE DAY
$340 Twenty8twelve high rise Royce sailor pants from shopbop.com
Currently top of our wish list, is these high waist wide leg trousers. With a subtle nod to this season’s nautical trend, wear with a simple white vest for instant summer chic.

Guess by Marciano $84.00

It works because of its easy-to-wear formula of interchangeable pieces in mix-and-match colours. You can dip your toe in with Max & Chloe’s wristful of Blu Red Enamel Bangle Set, also available in blue or play to the hilt in a crisply tailored navy trouser suit with red peep-toes and a white T-shirt.

Does class trump race?

Posted by v on May 9, 2008

Watching the elections, I have come upon some interesting facts which I am sure others find perplexing too. If you listen to the news, especially on CNN and Fox, you would think only white people vote for Hillary and only blacks vote Obama.  I think the media says this just to divide people and create mass chaos.

Then you listen closely and you hear them say ‘Affluent” white people are voting for Obama and, lower income “hard working” whites are voting for … wait … Hillary???

Okay, now I am seriously confused, doesn’t take much, trust me!. If rich white people are voting Obama and blacks are voting Obama, could this mean that they have, Gasp… something in common?    What? oh what? could this be.

They tell us that whites without college degrees, etc etc are voting for Hillary. They give a complete demographic breakdown but they have no demographic breakdown of the black voters.  Oh, they are just black!.  We need to know where these black people went to school, how poor or rich they are. We want to know how many children they have, what they do in their spare time, so that we can see what ALL black people have in common with affluent white people.

I was a fan of Hillary Clinton until she turned in to a fishwife and a beer drinking, gunslinging thug, who was dodging sniper bullets in Bosnia. It was so refreshing to see Obama not dignify those types of antics.  Come on, CNN, Fox and other news Media, you owe us that much. Don’t just be fear mongers, don’t contribute to this politics of division. Its not a race thang, its a human being thang!

Check out what one  of my favorite bloggers -”Racialicious”written by Carmen Van Kerckhove has to say about this issue, in her 4 part series. Carmen’s perspectives on race and racism have been featured in Newsweek, USA Today, The New York Times, MSNBC Live, and NPR’s News & Notes. You should check her out sometime.

Check out her readers opinion on this article on the front page of the Washington Post. It involves the late Martin Luther King Statue being built in Changsha, China. I don’t know about you but I think it is a great honor. Sounds cut and dried, Right. Oh no! People want the statue reworked. Amongst other questions asked, include “Why isn’t the sculptor black? MLK looks a little Asian? For Petes sake, because the sculptor is Asian?. I swear if the sulptor was Norwegian, they would say, the statue looks a little Norwegian.

A powerful federal arts commission is urging that the sculpture of Martin Luther King Jr. proposed for a memorial on the Tidal Basin be reworked because it is too “confrontational” and reminiscent of political art in totalitarian states.

The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts thinks “the colossal scale and Social Realist style of the proposed statue recalls a genre of political sculpture that has recently been pulled down in other countries,” commission secretary Thomas Luebke said in a letter in April.

By law, no project like the memorial can go forward without approval from the commission, the federal agency that advises the government on public design and aesthetics in the capital.

Here is a typical comment:

I totally see the criticism against it. Seriously, do we want a statue of MLK using imagery that’s associated with dictators like Stalin? If it’s an issue to have a photo of a black man that mimics imagery of a giant ape, then it is an issue to have a statue that mimics the imagery used to glorify totalitarian mass-murderers. - Jefferey.

So many criticisms have been leveled against this statue that truly people in fashion should have been called on to design it. The layout would have been superb, colors beautiful and he would have had a great expression. Let me see, I think his mouth would definitely have to be open, but not too open.

People, give it a rest and in the words of Rodney King, Can’t we all get along”? or at least “Shut Up “

Who the heck buys “House of Dereon” and why??

Posted by v on May 9, 2008

Are people truly buying Beyonce’s clothes??. First her mother makes clothes under the cringeworthy label “Touch of couture”, then “The forgotten Woman” . Not content with this exhibition of amazing tastelessness, Beyonce designs  House of Dereon”, while also making prom dresses and her sister branches out to “Dereon”. Now a line of clothing for her yet to be born children. STOP!!!!! This is torture, definitely not to be confused with couture.

The Dereon kids’ line also includes attire for newborns, infants, and toddlers. No child — perhaps no adult — should be branded with Deréon like that.  It is punishment.
We know Beyonce and her mom created the word “Bootylicious” and “curvelicious” and the trend of belting your sweater while wearing gold shorts and high heels but please do not bootify these little ones yet. What’s next, put them in a Jay z video while some preschool boys throw money at them??

The kids are in red heels and have on bright red lipstick to match their high heels, doing their best Jon Benet impression. This is not how little girls should dress!!!. Or pose, for that matter.  Didn’t anybody learn from that creepy guy they caught in Thailand?

Look at the pimped out kid with the fedora and the feather boar. Yikes!  And everyone went ape over Miley Cyrus, at least she was fifteen. Who and where are the parents?

Somebody has to stop the Knowles family.

Tina is back on tour! Vogue France /Vogue Italia Buzz!

Posted by v on May 9, 2008

TINA TURNER BACK ON TOUR   Iconic soul-R&B diva Tina Turner has announced that she will return to the road for the first time in eight years. The 68-year-old Grammy-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee will embark on a North American tour ( Yes! Canada included) scheduled to begin in Kansas on Oct. 1 (tickets on sale Monday).

After performing with Beyoncé at the Grammy Awards, the response was overwhelming,” Turner said in a statement. “Everywhere I went people were asking me when I was going back on tour. So after a lot of thought and planning, I can answer the only way I know how: See you in Kansas City, where we’ll kick the tour off!”

See the tour schedule here.

VOGUE ITALIA

Everyone could sure use this kind of Buzz. Can this issue come out already. Iman is rumored to be the “Vogue Italia” cover girl. Is this true? Stay tuned. (via Fashionista).

Now, Vogue France is creating  its own buzz. French Vogue is putting together a Gallic issue for June-July 2008, and two “very French” models have reportedly been booked. One was the “iconic face” of a “venerable designer” for years, and the other “rose to a more mass market kind of stardom.”  (Fashionologie)  Now who could they be??

ORPHANAID AFRICA

In addition to the annual star-studded affair for amfAR and bashes hosted by Dior, Bottega Veneta and Alberta Ferretti, fashion heiress Margherita Maccapani Missoni is having her own fete for   friendslike Jade Jagger and Mischa Barton.

Missoni, who is the brand ambassador for her family’s house, will host the party aboard the Pegasus yacht on May 16 along with Brit concierge company Quintessentially. The event will raise money for OrphanAid Africa, an organization Missoni has worked with since taking a trip to Ghana four years ago (she is currently the Italian president of the charity). As part of the initiative, a specially designed $640 diamond, rose gold and silk bracelet by Greek designer Ileana Makri will be sold at the event — the same baubles sported by Missoni and Barton at the recent Costume Institute Gala in New York. A $240 version will be widely available on the Web site Yoox.com.
Rachel Roy and Damon Dash are also creating their own special pieces for the cause.

DOVE REAL BEAUTY

Dove ( Unilever) insists their campaign is real.In a joint statement provided by Unilever regarding its “Campaign for Real Beauty,” the company, Ms. Leibovitz, who created the ads in question, and the celebrity photo re-toucher she works with — Pascal Dangin, who kicked off the controversy with a quote he said was taken out of context in an interview with The New Yorker magazine — all denied substantially altering images in the much-lauded campaign (Adage)

MISCHA BARTON

On the flip side, Mischa Barton claims cellulite was added to her bottom.  The fetching starlet is doubly horrified by a new batch of paparazzi beach shots - because they show not only her breasts, but legs that appear to be riddled with cellulite. “Those photos are doctored,” Barton’s rep, Lisa Perkins, tells us. “I’m not saying she’s perfect, nobody is. But they’ve given a 22-year-old woman the legs and bottom of an 80-year-old.” (NYDN)

Don’t worry too much about it Mischa, you just look normal to us.

Faking fabulousness!

Posted by v on May 9, 2008

It does not matter what state the economy is in, women always like to look good.

Sally Beauty Posts 12.7 Percent Gain. Sally Beauty Holdings Inc. had an active Thursday, as it announced a 12.7 percent rise in second-quarter profits, a new partnership with Paris Hilton for hair extensions and the acquisition of a 40-store beauty supply chain in Belgium called Pro-Duo, N.V.

After her last appearance on the David Letterman Show, Hilton vowed never to reutrn (she forgot to add that it was until she had something new to promote).  She returned yesterday to plug her new reality show, new line of extensions and her wait…. canned champagne??. Oh, Paris, trust you to tart everything up. I wonder what she’ll come up with in the Spray tan area.

JESSICA SIMPSON ON THE MOST GLAMOROUS WOMEN OF 2008

The summer months traditionally have been good ones on the newsstand for Glamour, but given the current economic environment, no issue is a sure thing. So perhaps that’s why the magazine is retreading a well-worn formula for its June issue: the “50 Most Glamorous Women of ‘08,” as selected by readers and a panel of fashion insiders. Of course, the list isn’t to be confused with People magazine’s “100 Most Beautiful” ranking, which comes out at about the same time.

For the list, the magazine put together a panel of fashion insiders and asked June cover girl Jessica Simpson to oversee the process. Other judges were Zac Posen and Tracy Reese, Simon Doonan, Linda Fargo of Bergdorf Goodman, Reed Krakoff of Coach, photographers Patrick Demarchelier and Patrick McMullan, stylists Andrea Lieberman, Serge Normant, Estee Stanley and Cristina Ehrlich, Ivan Bart of IMG Models and Glamour’s fashion director, Xanthipi Joannides. (WWD)

Jessica Simpson also launched a hair extensions a while back but unfortunately did not go on Letterman to promote them. At least, she has great hair.
Jessica Simpson’s countless ‘dos can be yours with this line of clip-in hair extensions. Created by the singer/actress/former reality star’s mane man, Ken Paves, each piece is made of styleable human hair or a ready-to-wear hair substitute called Vibralite, and is expertly colored to blend in with your own natural strands. What’s more, they’re based on styles Simpson has personally worn, for a truly authentic look. Affordable, lightweight and easy to attach, these virtually undetectable extensions can be put in and taken out in a matter of minutes. Available at Shop.com Price: $90 to $500

8 firms (Neiman Marcus inc.) fined for flaw in Childrens’ wear.

Posted by v on May 9, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that eight firms have agreed to pay a total of $320,000 to settle allegations that the firms failed to report to the CPSC, as required by federal law, that their children’s hooded sweatshirts or jackets were sold with drawstrings at the hood and neck. These products, which the firms eventually recalled, pose strangulation hazards that can cause death to children. The settlements have been provisionally accepted.

Here are the eight firms involved and the items recalled:

  • True Religion Apparel Inc. (Recall | Agreement)
  • The Cayre Group Ltd. (Recall | Agreement)
  • DollarDays International, LLC (Recall | Agreement)
  • Kohl’s Department Stores Inc. (Recall | Agreement)
  • Seena International Inc. (Recall | Agreement)
  • Neiman Marcus Group Inc (Recall | Agreement)
  • Gildan Activewear SRL (Recall | Agreement
  •

Federal law requires manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to report to CPSC immediately (within 24 hours) after obtaining information reasonably supporting the conclusion that a product contains a defect which could create a substantial risk of injury to the public, presents an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death, or violates a federal safety standard.

In agreeing to settle the matters, the firms deny CPSC’s allegations that they knowingly violated the law. That’s right, never admit guilt. Wonder what they did with the recalls, probably sent them to third world countries.
