Galliano resort “cruises” into New York.

Posted by v on May 13, 2008

In an explosion of over-the-top retro glamour, John Galliano dove into New York’s resort circuit Monday night with Dior’s cruise collection.

His lavish ladies, done up in cascades of citrus-colored ruffles, caftans, and supersized sombreros, sailed in from Acapulco, circa 1960, in the exuberant style of Millicent Rogers and Nan Kempner.
John Galliano packed his front row on Monday with his famous, and famously loyal, friends, including Charlize Theron, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Leighton Meester and Ziyi Zhang.

Wide, swathy gypsy pants, off-the-shoulder ruffled tops, loose baby doll dresses and a diaphanous crepe belted caftan with a fall that extended from the shoulders - Lopez pointed out one in lime to a friend seated next to her - along with empire-waist gowns and plenty of brightly colored tiered dresses in preppy colors like fuchsia, lime and tangerine rounded out this fairly standard issue collection of resort wear that will work well whether you’re lounging in St. Tropez, Palm Beach or Greece.

A loose and comfortable voluminous silhouette ruled the runway here - great for hiding those post-pregnancy bulges, say - with enough flirty details like bows at the waist or glitzy beaded embellishment to keep it from completely entering soccer mom territory.

And J.Lo looks no less than spectacular!

Howard Socol ( Barneys CEO) resigns.

Posted by v on May 13, 2008

What does this mean to you? Probably squat unless you are in line for his job or if it affects the price of shoes at Barneys. The only troubling issue is that he quit when the store is experiencing signicant growth so what does this mean for Barneys?

Barneys New York said Tuesday that chairman, president and chief executive officer Howard Socol has resigned. Socol joined Barneys in January 2001 and will stay with the luxury chain through the end of June, the company said. Barneys will choose a search firm to find a successor.
Socol guided Barneys through a period of significant growth. Socol said it was his decision to leave.

After more than seven of the greatest years of my long career in retail, I felt it was time to take time to enjoy all the opportunities that life affords,” he said. “I felt strongly about remaining with the company for a short period following the sale to Istithmar as well as through the opening of our Las Vegas flagship. With the sale process well behind us and the Las Vegas location having opened in January of this year, this is the appropriate time to move forward.”
During Socol’s tenure, Barneys opened four flagship stores, 15 Barneys NewYork Co-op stores and two outlets.

Calling Americas next Top model (over 35 )

Posted by v on May 13, 2008

Following “America’s Next Top Model” and Bravo’s “Make Me a Supermodel,” yet another reality show will launch with a handful of ambitious beauties, celebrity judges and the enticing prize of a photo shoot for a major magazine. But this show won’t be targeted toward reality programming’s core audience of 18- to 34-year-olds. TV Land on June 4 will debut “She’s Got the Look,” a search for the next top model over 35.

Cindy Crawford

Women will compete in the usual runway walk offs and photo shoot challenges for a modeling contract with Wilhelmina Models and a shoot for Self. Former Self cover model Kim Alexis will host the show, and Beverly Johnson, stylist Robert Verdi and Wilhelmina president Sean Patterson will serve as judges. Self’s editors will appear in several episodes to dispense health and fitness tips, and editor in chief Lucy Danziger will appear in the final episode to help pick the winner.
The show is part of TV Land’s push for more original programming to cater to the over 40 set. The network also produced “High School Reunion,” which centered around a group of graduates from a 1987 high school class, and is shooting a pilot for a “Bachelor”-style dating show featuring older women and younger men.

For Self, which has a median age of 36, the show’s feel-good premise aligned with its brand mission, according to Danziger: “It wasn’t about a makeover or losing weight, it was about becoming who you could be and reaching your fullest potential as a woman.” Participation in the show also reaps financial benefits — Self sold two joint sponsorships for the program, to Aveeno and Jenny Craig. The title is no stranger to television; it had previously produced a show with VH1 around their “Rock Bodies” franchise but will not repeat that program this year.

Watch the video for a sneak peek. and check out Ernetines’, 59 bootilicious model poses and Jazzmun, 35, the transgendered contestant. Yikes!!

Daria Werbowy launches “DW” makeup line for Lancome.

Posted by v on May 13, 2008

Deriving inspiration from a trip to Brazil, Canadaian Supermodel Daria Werbowy collaborated with Lancome for a makeup line consisting of earthy rich tones.

Werbowy began by mixing pigments, then graduated to adding pearl to eye shadows and learning techniques to make lipsticks more opaque or translucent — something that the former art student had a blast with. “I started to appreciate red lipstick and other makeup colors I generally don’t wear,” she said. “You can spend days creating one shade — I didn’t really realize the extent of color creation before. But I loved the immediacy of being able to mix and then try things right away, and I got to keep mixing and changing them until they were perfect.”

Proceeds from the collection go to a great cause: Centro Espacial Vik Muniz, a children’s art center in Rio de Janeiro.

Available in Canada at Holt Renfrew.

The Cannes Watch

Posted by v on May 13, 2008

PARIS, France — “Blindness,” a Fernando Meirelles movie starring Julianne Moore, will open this year’s Cannes Film Festival, organizers said Tuesday. Based on a novel by Nobel laureate Jose Saramago, it’s about a city where inhabitants inexplicably go blind, one by one. Moore stars as the sole person to keep her sight during the ordeal. Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover and Gael Garcia Bernal co-star.

Official schedule of the Cannes Festival

Barry Levinson’s “What Just Happened?,” about a Hollywood producer struggling to make a film, is scheduled to close the festival. It stars Robert De Niro, Bruce Willis, Robin Wright Penn, John Turturro and Sean Penn. Festival organizers said Tuesday that De Niro also is slated to present the top Palme d’Or prize at the end of the festival May 25. It kicks off May 14.

Cannes opens in full swing Wednesday. American big movie names do not dominate this years event so expect to see less blockbuster hyped movies and a healthier dose of global glitz and glamour. And if past years are any indication, a few of the films unfurled here could fire the opening shots in this year’s Oscar race.

There are several films of interest on the line up. One which I would love to see is Marina Zenovich’s documentary “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired”  It was the belle of the ball at the Sundance Film Festival in January where it was purchased by HBO. In Cannes “Polanski” will play as one of six films in the special screenings selection. HBO has already given the documentary a one-week theatrical run to make it eligible for Academy Award consideration prior to airing it on television.

The much hyped ““Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” has its premiers and world junket in Cannes on May 18. No pressure, None at all. Is that why Harrison Ford did not bring a clip on Jay Leno?

Couturiers, thread your needles. The race to the Oscars has begun.

Supreme Style!!

Posted by v on May 13, 2008

‘Coloured people on TV! You never saw anything like it in the 1960s. Three women of colour who were totally empowered - creative, imaginative, beautiful, poised. To see the Supremes and know that it was possible to be like them, that black people could do that…’ - Oprah Winfrey

STYLE SUPREME: Its here. The long awaited Supremes exhibit. We told you about it in April.  Click here to read. The Supremes star Mary Wilson swept into London’s Victoria and Albert Museum Monday to launch “The Story of The Supremes, From the Mary Wilson Collection,” an exhibition of 50 gowns from the Motown group’s performance history, taken from her own archive. “The U.K. was one of the first places that embraced The Supremes,” said Wilson, who was wearing a simple black jersey dress. “I remember [U.K. music television show] ‘Top of the Pops’ and performing at Drury Lane in the Sixties, so it’s very appropriate to have the exhibition here.”

The exhibit, which runs through Oct. 19, includes examples of the group’s glittering, sequined gowns from the Sixties, including a set of three orange and yellow beaded, psychedelic-print butterfly dresses with sweeping chiffon sleeves, and plush black velvet Bob Mackie dresses with glass jewels embroidered around the deep necklines. “The heaviest dresses we had were 35 pounds each,” remembered Wilson with a laugh. “We were typical women, buying clothes all the time.” These ornate gowns contrast with a simple yellow sweatshirt printed with the words “Love Child,” which Diana Ross wore on the cover of the group’s socially conscious single of the same name. Indeed, the dresses and record sleeves in the show are exhibited alongside text and news footage that explains the political climate in Sixties America that The Supremes performed against, charting the race riots in Los Angeles in 1965 and Martin Luther King’s assassination in 1968. “Segregation was widespread, but music brought people together,” said Wilson. “It’s not only [about] beautiful gowns.”
