WITH a front row-perched Kim Cattrall inviting some serious flashbulb action from the assembled paparrazzi, Vivienne Westwood’s Anglomania show closed a high-octane Berlin Fashion Week in true star style last night.

The Anglomania collection reinterprets Vivienne Westwood’s iconic shapes for a younger, more casual customer. Its basis is Vivienne Westwood’s fashion career from the 1970’s onwards. Many garments from her past collections are prized and collected as classics. The fashion statement has been so strong that it tells a story which captures the imagination. Anglomania is a concentration of all this inspiration. Its core is the dynamic cut which Vivienne Westwood has pioneered throughout her career.

For Spring/Summer 2009, Anglomania takes its inspiration from Greek antiquity. Draped column dresses in plain and stripy jersey echo Greek statues while a grape print alludes to Bacchanelean festivals. Motifs from vases adorn tee-shirts and dresses. The look is given a twist with touches of 50’s couture present in prom dresses and sexy suits. White is a dominant colour with accents of bright red, green, yellow and fuchsia.

Grape patterns, Grecian draping, the signature Westwood pirate boot and some quirkily chic Indian head-shrinkers were high points of the typically playful and tongue-in-cheek collection, which was modelled by curly-topped girls who danced and head-bopped along the catwalk.

The Anglomania show may have been the most highly anticipated on the schedule, but that’s not to say the smaller design houses didn’t pull their weight when it came to the weekend’s offerings.

A politically-charged range of Sixties psychedelics from Michalsky, pearl and crystal-encrused couturesque designs from Scherer Gonzalez and a modern take on classic black, courtesy of Slavna Martinovic, were more than enough enough to leave the fashion pack hailing Berlin as a new centre of sartorial excellence.
